1970 was a remarkable year for rock albums. Badfinger released their U.S. debut album, Magic Christian Music, while Simon & Garfunkel released Bridge Over Troubled Water, their final studio album. Chicago Transit Authority dropped the final two words in the band name and released Chicago (retroactively known as Chicago II), while The Guess Who’s American Woman became their final album to feature co-founding guitarist Randy Bachman.
Elton John released his eponymous debut album, while Free’s Fire and Water became their most successful album. Neil Young took a break from CSNY to release After The Gold Rush, and Derek & The Dominos released Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs, their sole studio album.
Finally, George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass, his first solo work after the break-up of The Beatles, shot to #1 in over a dozen countries and became the most successful album ever released by an ex-Beatle.
There were a lot of other groundbreaking album releases in 1970: Van Morrison’s Moondance, James Taylor’s Sweet Baby James, The Beatles’ Let It Be, The Kinks’ Lola Versus Powerman and The Moneygoround, Part One, Cat Stevens’ Tea For The Tillerman, Led Zeppelin’s Led Zeppelin III, CCR’s Cosmo’s Factory, Rod Stewart’s Gasoline Alley, Traffic’s John Barleycorn Must Die, and many more.
Yeah, I could have played songs from some of those albums, too, but this medley was already over 37 minutes long so I had to apply the brakes!

Thanks, Don. You are absolutely correct. The album trend, which started in the late 60s, had completely taken over the importance of the single by the 1970s. By the way, I have done a Neil medley before. 🙂
Both Sides of Neil Young
This was so cool to hear 70s music, from artists that I haven’t listened to for a while. A real treat to go back in time as always. I loved hearing Elton John, and Simon and Garfunkel. You always know how to put these medleys together, and for a very pleased audience I might say. Thanks so much Ray! You’re the best.
Thank you for that lovely comment, Sandy. 🥰
I probably don’t do enough 70s music but that might be because I started this site 16 years ago by focusing on the 60s. Considering the fact that the songs I played today are 52 years old, it’s safe to say they qualify as StreamingOLDIES!
Another great medley .. love Elton John and the others ……… how can you go wrong with the 70’s .. takes me back down memory lane!
My brain is a bit fried as I just finished 2nd 9 day hour and trying to stay awake … LOL
the 60’s and 70’s were the best and you rock!
Have a good evening and stay warm!

Thank you, Penny 🥰
Don’t fight the feeling … go to sleep! I’d say you’ve earned it.
Raining here right now and 37 degrees … 6-10 inches of snow coming on Friday. 🙁
STAY SAFE! ❤
