For Jo-Anne & Eugene
It is a very special day for a very special couple. On this date fifty years ago, Jo-Anne Davis exchanged wedding vows with Eugene Burton and they have been a shining example of what marriage should look like ever since.
This medley didn’t begin with grandiose plans. Jo-Anne had written to me recently to tell me a song I had played in a medley just happened to be the first song she and Eugene danced to at their wedding on October 25, 1974.
That got me thinking about devoting a segment of today’s medley to them, but that soon turned into a full-scale tribute to them and their devotion to each other. That resulted in this 56-minute marathon of love songs. I need to emphasize this was not a labor of love on my part. It was an act of love, dedicated to two very extraordinary people.
So why them? I have known other couples who have been married 50 years or longer. There are simple reasons why I have done this. I have known them since Jo was 12 and Eugene was 15, and even more important, I have a deep, deep respect and great admiration for them. If you’re fortunate enough to know them, I’m sure you feel the same way.
There are sixteen love songs in this medley, including of course the “first dance” song. The first and last song tie the entire medley into a circle; much like a wedding ring. Happy Anniversary, kids. I Love You. ♥️
