George Harrison Medley

George Harrison died on this date in 2001 and it feels like a good time to do a retrospective look at his solo career in chronological order. Yes, I said solo because by 1970, Harrison had long grown tired of being a Beatle. No song said that better than one of his songs on All Things Must Pass, his first solo record following the Beatle’ breakup.

We start out with Run Of The Mill, a reference to the “abuse and humiliation” that Harrison had received at Twickenham, during the filming of Let It Be. In Georges eye’s, just walking onto the cavernous set was “Another day for you to realize me / Or send me down again.”

It starts with a plea to Paul to stop being so heavy handed. “It was when Apple was getting crazy. Paul was falling out with us all and going around Apple offices saying ‘You’re no good.’ Everyone was just incompetent. It was that period – the problem of partnerships.”

The lyrics are very telling.
Everyone has choice
When to or not to raise their voices
It’s you that decides
Which way you will turn
While feeling that our love’s not your concern
.

It presented Harrison’s realization that he had to walk away and carry on with his own life. And carry on he did. This 13-song collection is but a fragment of the music he left us, beginning with the All Things Must Pass album, where we were introduced to Harrison’s brilliant slide guitar (an instrument George never played with the Beatles) and ending with the posthumously released Brainwashed album in November 2002, almost a year after his death at age 58.

What’s not to like about George’s talent? He died way too soon. I remember when I thought 58 was pretty old, but now-a-days it seems very young. I change some of my perspective as time goes on.

    What a powerful mix!

    Thank you, Ray

      Thank you, Jim 🥰
George died much too soon, and as much as I wonder how much more he could have accomplished with his music, it is his wisdom I miss the most.

George made the Beatles and to die so young is a loss of so much more music to come!! George was a brilliant man and one heck of a good musician!! Why he never played slide guitar with them is beyond me! I know in my music career EGO’S hurt a lot of good groups! Paul and John were the showmen and notice how little Ringo and George really never got there just do!! Loved every song Ray and you know he was my favorite!! So sad he left us so early!! By the way anyone notice how good Ringo looks!! Stay warm!!
        Love ya!!

          Thanks, Fred!
Your comments about George was right on the money! As for Ringo, at the age of 83, he looks and sings much better than Paul now. I’m trying to stay warm but it’s only 27!
          Love ya!

Well, I finally listened to all of this after many interruptions. I must admit I was never one of those screaming teenagers over the Beatles, and I did not listen much to them when they split up. I did enjoy this medley with a few songs that touched me where I am in my life now. So sad that we lost so many singers so young.

      Thanks, Pat 🥰
Maybe it was the small town we both grew up in. I know a lot of my female classmates loved the Beatles (probably Paul, the “cute one” more than the others) but I don’t recall any of them acting like screaming teenagers. Maybe they did when they were watching them on TV. 🙂
I am glad you enjoyed some of these songs, and I totally get it with “where I am in my life now.” Some of them resonate.

Morning Ray, catching up on last week’s offerings as we were away for eight days.
This medley is one of my favorites as you know I am a George Harrison fan. Thanks for keeping his talent and our memories of him in a current spotlight.
