Remembering Bobby Rydell

The music world lost a true “teen idol” yesterday with the passing of Bobby Rydell at the age of 79. A prolific hitmaker, Rydell – born Robert Louis Ridarelli in Philadelphia in 1942 – recorded 34 Top 100 hits during his career, but it was between 1959 and 1964 that he was the hottest, placing 19 songs in the Top 40.

Every one of the 11 songs in this medley were part of his Top 40 success.

Despite selling 25 million records during his long career, Rydell never considered himself a rock legend. “I was not really a rock and roll singer. I’m an American Songbook guy.”

He spent the latter part of his life as part of “The Golden Boys” stage production, along with fellow Philadelphian teen idols Frankie Avalon and Fabian.

Thanks, Fred. It takes a wise man who knows when to rein it in out of respect for someone. Today you showed you are a very wise man.
I agree that Bobby had, by far, the best singing voice of all of the teen idols. He could be mellow but he could also bang it out. Forget Him has always been one of my favorite songs.
      Love Ya!

      Thanks, Penny 🥰
I think a lot of people don’t remember some of the songs in the medley but they were big hits in a much simpler time.

Perfect medley to remember Bobby. Forget Him, was his best song, I think. (My favorite, anyway!)

      Thank you, Pat 🥰
“I’d met a songwriter and producer by the name of Tony Hatch,” Rydell said in 2003. “We went in to record an album for Pye Records, and one of the songs that came out of the album was a 45 single called “Forget Him.” My management team didn’t want to release it because it wasn’t their publishing. But a disc jockey in Toronto, Canada, started playing the record and basically that’s how it started. It went from Canada down to Detroit and then they had to release it.”
