1973 Vintage Hits

Before anyone tries to tell me songs from 1973 are too “new,” I’ll remind you that music is 49 years old. They most definitely are oldies!

One thing that changed in the Seventies was the fact singles were much longer than they had been in the Sixties. Yesterday I played eight songs from 1961 and the medley lasted 18 minutes. Today I’m playing seven songs from 1973 and the medley lasts just under 28 minutes.

Rock Factoid: Even though they had split three years earlier, all four members of The Beatles were still producing hit songs. Ringo, Paul and George all had #1 songs, while John reached #18 with his single.

Wow Ray I think I can hear drums in this song!! Who said drummers can’t sing!! His poor heart is broke!! Maybe he should go to Chicago with that photograph! Ray I believe in you and you are getting stronger everyday! And I’m thinking if Ringo gets lost in Chicago And could use Pauls wings before Paul goes away!! His love does it good! But I can’t believe his cupboard is ever bare as his love does it good! Then I’m thinking that George was the best Beatle so he told Ringo that he would give him hope to cope and he would take the heavy load!! He also told him not to turn Pink when Floyd cranked up the back ground music and stay away from money!! Then John told him that playing those mind games was the answer and to let it go!! So let it ride!! Ray you were in Overdrive this AM!! love ya!!

Didn’t the length of songs (usually around 3 minutes) have to do with 45’s ? Just popped into my mind…I could have made it up though LOL
As always Thanks for the memories and fine choices

      Great question, Eileen! 🥰
There has long been the question of how long one side of a 45 play. Most 45s ran from 2-5 minutes. John Lennon once asked producer George Martin in 1968 about this and Martin, after some experimenting, claimed to have found the answer – 7 minutes, 15 seconds. Taking into account standard groove width and the automatic record changer, which was very popular in those days, if a song went any longer, it risked tripping the automatic changing mechanism of many of these record changers.
In any event, Martin was wrong. The longest one I’ve ever seen is Lunar Sea by Camel, which lasted over 10 minutes.

Well well, if this doesn’t shake the soul! What a great bunch of 70s songs. Like I’ve told you before I don’t think I can ever not like a Beatles song even when they split up and started doing their own. I still thought they were all so very talented. And you certainly can’t ever mess with Chicago, or Pink Floyd. Bachman-turner overdrive! So talented. Yes this was definitely a toetapping morning for me! Just some great selections in this medley! You’re the best Ray! ❤️

I think the 70’s had great music and this medley confirms that! 🙂 Absolutely great songs and even greater artists! Isn’t it awesome that the members of the Beatles did such great songs on their own! Fabulous finish with BTO …. Let it ride! What great songs and trip down memory lane!!
Sorry for the late comments .. LOL
    Have a great day!
