(Mostly) Mellow #1 Hits

It’s Thursday and that means a trip back to the 70s. Today’s medley will hopefully soothe your mind because it’s filled with (mostly) mellow songs from that decade and every single one of them was a #1 hit.

I’ll let you know in advance that after I have lulled you into a state of relative calm, I will wake you up with the final two songs … most definitely the final one. πŸ™‚

Good morning, Ray. Well I see you are bringing out the big guns today. Neil Sedaka, one of the best Pop songwriters of the last several decades is hard to top. He has showcased his talent year after year and has proven his ability over and over again. Now the Bellamy Brothers are a classic case of clever lyrics that make their point in a most entertaining way. Maybe the best song title ever, β€œIf I Said You Had A Beautiful Body Would You hold It Against Me?” A classic that says it all, although a bit long for a title. Jim Croce, Ray, you’re killing me! What a master wordsmith! His work can take listeners from side splitting laughter to being put through an emotional wringer. He literally can write music that goes straight to your heart. His life story only makes his songs more intense. George Harrison, first he’s a Beatle for goodness sake! After you get over that fact, he is just A-mazing! You can fill several albums of his solo work and never get tired of his innovative style. Karen Carpenter had one of the sweetest voices ever. When I hear her sing I just want to put my arms around her and hold her. I wish someone had done that and if they had maybe we would not have lost her. Neil Diamond is Mr. Pop and although not a personal favorite I can recognize his ability to entertain and do it so well. He has so many Pop classics and has endured for decades he deserves to be in the Pop Pantheon.
I know you thought I would dis the Mellow Mix but you won me over Ray. I listened, enjoyed and am not the least bit sleepy. (and it was not all Bill Conti that did it). Well done my friend, once again you stepped up and me a believer. (Didn’t Neil Diamond write a song about that?)

      Thanks, Don.
I didn’t expect you to give me a hard time with this medley. I just thought you might see the “mellow” description and simply walk on by. I am glad you didn’t and I’m very happy you enjoyed it.:)
I know you enjoy the harder stuff but I have to fit in the softer music on occasion for the (many) others who prefer it.
      ROCK ON, BROTHER!

Nailed it once again! You started us off with incredible mellow melodies helping us get ready for the final half of the week. Then, at the perfect moment you inspire energy Rocky-style and finish with a happy-go-lucky feel-good song. Off we go to enjoy and make the most of this day! Thank you!!! πŸ™‚ XOXOXOXO πŸ™‚

Ray …….. you did it again!!! Great set of songs, love every one of them and have memories tied to almost all of them. When I hear something from the Carpenters, Jim Croce or others lost way to young I wonder how much further they would have gone since they were so talented!! They will live on for us thru the wonderful music they did share! to me, that is the beauty of music ……. it is timeless!!

Thank you so much, Penny. ❀️
I am constantly torn between playing “rock and roll” and the “softer stuff”. There is certainly a place for both and I think you just convinced me that Thursday will not only be 70s music, it will be music on the quieter side from now on.
      Thank You!

  4. Pat Conant

Great music again today, Ray. I guess I’m the mellow type!! The not so mellow ones were still great. Love “I Can Help” Such a positive song, amidst all the negativity now.

      Thanks, Pat. πŸ™‚
With that in mind, I will advise you to skip Friday’s medley. It is LOUD rock! Just some friendly advice for one of my favorite people. πŸ™‚
