Remembering Roy Orbison

On December 6, 1988, Roy Orbison was in the midst of a massive career resurgence. After being out of the limelight for almost two decades, he had rebounded, first as a 1987 inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, then as a member of The Traveling Wilburys, and was also planning a release for Mystery Girl, his comeback solo album.

He died of a massive heart attack that night at the age of 52.

On the 32nd anniversary of his passing, I am playing a nine-song medley of his music, beginning with one of his earliest recordings in 1959 all the way through his final recording in 1988.
Wait, that’s not quite true. I was going to end with that song from Mystery Girl but I decided to end the medley with his signature song from 1964.

It seemed only fitting.

I have long believed Roy Orbison had the sweetest voice this side of heaven. Nothing or no one has ever changed my opinion. There are a few singer/songwriters who have the ability to make me ache inside and cause me to marvel at the beauty of the art of song. Virtually every Roy Orbison song did that.

Ray, I’ with you on Team Roy 100%. He had a distinctive, haunted voice. I also associate his voice with a certain sadness and longing. His voice elicited very distinct emotions, not sympathy but empathy..it could be you in his situation. I am shocked that he died at 52. It warms my heart that he was recognized and embraced by his younger peers. He most certainly deserves their adulation. In the same way that Elton John reached out to Leon Russell and introduced him to a younger generation. Nice to know that Rock stars have a heart. If this represents your idea of a Mellow Sunday Morning, I am on board. Once again, thank you Ray for taking the time to put together a set of good memories to begin my day.

Don, I know I have said this before about other singers but I really could have made this medley a lot longer. That man recorded so many other classics which were left off because of time constraints. I gave some thought to doing a part 2 tomorrow but I will probably move on.
      Have a wonderful day, Bro.

Ray, maybe you should consider making Sunday a longer set. I can appreciate that many people might not have the time for a longer set during the week but Sunday, hopefully might provide more time to enjoy kicking back for a more lengthy mix. I don’t know, I’m going to listen anyway.
