A Medley For Barbara

This is not your typical Mellow Sunday Medley.

Barbara wrote and asked for “a medley of songs that are about our country — that promote patriotism … we are so divided right now that I worry that we will forget what our country means to us.”

She suggested several songs and I did my best with the rest (hoping they get her point across). I think one of the lines in Brad Paisley’s song captures perfectly what Barbara’s prayer for this country is all about.

“How do we honor those who have fallen and died for this dream? I’m sure of one thing, it’s not with gridlock or bickering.”

As Election Day approaches, I hope all of us pause to remember that in the end, we are not Republicans or Democrats. We are, first and foremost, Americans. This presidential campaign has divided us like no other I can recall. Let’s try to remember all the good there is in this country and recall the events that brought us together as one.

Thank you, Suzanne. These are very troubled times and I am so discouraged about what is happening in “my” America. I hope and pray that we recover from the violence in the streets, but I am worried that the aftermath of this election may make it worse. The media has certainly not helped with their agenda driven coverage.

IT IS OUTSTANDING RAY …. and just listening to these songs gives me hope. I will repost it and listen to it repeatedly during the next few days … I am so worried – but you said it so well – we are all Americans … One Nation Under God .. and we need to protect and preserve our Country. Lee Greenwood’s song was the perfect ending. Thank you from the bottom of my heart – you are the best ….. Rock this Day my dear friend ….

      Barbara,
I am so pleased to know you enjoyed it. I can’t thank you enough for suggesting it. The timing was simply perfect!
      ROCK THIS DAY, YOUNG LADY!

Thank you Barbara & Ray for a thoughtful and tuneful start to my Sunday. As you said Ray, the timing is perfect.
I turned away from Rock and moved over to Country in the 80s. I was taken there because of Country’s ability to tell a simple story, with great imagery. Directly and unashamedly. Unfortunately Country has in large part been seduced by Pop and I find myself looking back more and more to the songs of my youth. They still ring true.
You both did a fine job of entertaining and reminding us of what is truly important.

      Thank you, Don.
My part in this effort was minimal. Barbara came up with the theme and it was my pleasure to mix it together.
I turned away from Rock in the late 70s because to my ears, it was no longer Rock. The glam hair bands and synthesizer drenched music didn’t appeal at all. I am happy, to paraphrase Ronnie Milsap, to be stuck in the 50s,60s and 70s.
There are several Country artists I really enjoy … Desert Rose Band (with Chris Hillman, late of The Byrds), Dwight Yoakam, Toby Keith, Alan Jackson and Rosanne Cash.
Sorry, I got sidetracked. 🙂 Back to your comment. Your kind words are sincerely appreciated.

Hey Ray you would be right at home in my archives. I am a big Chris Hillman fan myself. Are you familiar with the albums he made with Herb Peterson? Way Out West & Bakersfield Bound? They both are very good. The last time he came to town he was touring with Richie Furay. The each did their own set and at the end did some songs together. Great show in an intimate setting.

        1. Ray (Post author)

Don, I have both of the albums you mentioned, in addition to Hillman’s last solo effort (Bidin’ My Time) which was produced by Tom Petty. Speaking of the Desert Rose Band, I can’t forget the great guitarist John Jorgenson.

Thanks for asking Barb and Ray for producing this collection of songs to uplift us through the stress filled days ahead. May God Bless America and bring us together to re unite for the better of us all!! Love you guys!

      Thank you, Bonnie.
God has blessed America but I’m afraid too many have thrown that blessing away. There is time to turn that around but we must start now!

  5. Penny

Barbara picked out some of the most amazing songs and in these troubling times is uplifting! (music always is) I think there was once upon a time when politics and voting was done with a bit of decorum ….. not anymore it seems! In the scheme of things we are all on this planet for such a short time. With that said, I always try to look at the good out there (and there is good) and try to do my part to make this world a better place when it is my time to leave – even if it is for only one person! We may not be able to change the world (as much as we would like to) but we can change our little bit in it! Thanks for the great songs and theme today Barbara and as always ……….. thank you RAY for taking the time to put it together!!! Have a safe and wonderful day my friend!

      Thank you, Penny 🙂
Very well said. There is so little civility in our world today but YOU always remain above the fray … ALWAYS. ❤️

  6. Wendyl

Very timely, indeed! Thanks for these inspiring and uplifting choices….so very needed and appreciated! XOXOXOXO

    1. Ray (Post author)

      Thank you, Wendyl ❤️
Don is right, country music is the best for “telling a story” and Barbara wears her heart on her sleeve. It added up to the perfect combination.
      XOXOXOXO

I must chime in again and let everyone know the request was mine but the selections were Ray’s. They were exactly what I hoped for and he did an outstanding job of putting it together. Many thanks Ray for everything you do for so many.

Barbara, thank you for the plug but you were the inspiration 🙂

  8. Pat Conant

Thank you Barbara and Ray for this very inspirational medley. I am daring to dream that ALL Americans will remember what this country is all about, and that we will pull together after this election, and make a better nation for everyone. GOD BLESS AMERICA.

    1. Ray (Post author)

      Thank you, Pat.
I pray that your dream will come true.
      GOD BLESS AMERICA!
