Remembering John Lennon on what would have been – and should have been – his 80th birthday.
The photograph at the bottom was taken by Rolling Stone magazine photographer Annie Leibovitz less than 12 hours before he was murdered.
Following the photo session, radio personality Dave Sholin arrived at the Dakota for an interview with Lennon to promote the Double Fantasy album.
When the interview came to a close, Lennon remarked, “I consider that my work won’t be finished until I’m dead and buried and I hope that’s a long, long time.“
I have included six medleys below; three featuring Lennon with the Beatles, and three highlighting his solo years.
Listen … and celebrate his life.

What an amazing talent! He could be, and was, outrageous at times but what an original! The artistic growth he exhibited was unparalleled and he pushed his listeners to grow with him. I can’t think of another artist who has the range of John Lennon. December 8th was a dark day indeed.
At that time I would alway have my radio on as I fell asleep. I think it was around 11 PM when I heard the news of his killing. It seemed unreal. Tossed and turned that night with my mind racing.
Thank you, Don.
I was watching MNF and get the news from Howard Cosell. I think I was pretty much numb the rest of the night, although I do recall phoning a friend at a radio station and sharing our thoughts.
amazing musician taken way too soon ….. thanks to the dirtbag who shot him, we will never know what additional contributions John would have made 🙁
Thank you, Penny.
Very eloquently said. ❤️
