In 1965, these headlines were in the news…
The march from Selma to Montgomery; Malcolm X was assassinated; the Voting Rights Act of 1965; In Cold Blood killers Richard Hickock and Perry Smith were executed; 3,500 United States Marines arrived in South Vietnam, becoming the first American combat troops in Vietnam (by the end of the year, U.S. troop deployment increased to nearly 200,000); the U.S. began a 3½-year aerial bombardment campaign against North Vietnam; draft protests in Berkeley, CA, Washington, DC (and dozens of other locations); the Watts Riots in Los Angeles; LBJ announced the “Great Society: Pope Paul VI became the first Pope to visit the U.S.; astronaut Ed White made the first U.S. space walk; the Gateway Arch was completed in St. Louis; the Houston Astrodome opened; the Northeast Blackout; the Pillsbury Doughboy debuted; the Super Ball went on sale.
Sir Winston Churchill, Edward R. Murrow, Stan Laurel, Alan Freed, Nat King Cole, and the real life Moonlight Graham died.
Doctor Zhivago, The Sound of Music, The Greatest Story Ever Told, Cat Ballou, In Harm’s Way, The Agony and The Ecstasy and Thunderball all premiered in theaters; Man of La Mancha premiered in New York City; A Charlie Brown Christmas premiered on CBS; Hullabaloo and Days of Our Lives premiered on NBC.
The average cost of new house was $13,600; the average income was $6,450; the average cost of a new car was $2,650; gasoline cost 31 cents a gallon; the Dow Jones Industrial Average ended the year at 969.
And in music?
Bob Dylan went “electric” at Newport; the Beatles played at Shea Stadium; Arlo Guthrie was arrested for littering in the town of Stockbridge, MA; the Grateful Dead made their concert debut; it was the year of blockbuster albums such as Rubber Soul, Highway 61 Revisited, Out Of Our Heads, Summer Days (and Summer Nights!!), and Mr. Tambourine Man.
One more thing … There were 27 songs that reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and throughout this week, we will be playing every single one of them (and several more that just missed making it to the top).
So yes, it’s going to be a great week of rock and roll memories, but today we start the week the same way we start every week; with a selection of timeless songs from the spotlight year that were definitely on the softer side because every Sunday is Mellow Sunday.

1965 Vintage Medley / Part 1
Donovan – Gerry & The Pacemakers
Righteous Brothers – Elvis Presley
Lovin’ Spoonful – Roger Miller
I love the 1965 moments and headlines! I will look forward to a week filled with amazing chart-topping songs! And today’s mellow hits are so appreciated! XOXOXOXO
When the little things you’re doin’, don’t turn out right, or you forget everything you had ready to say, just give it some time. Time can do so much! Even a man of means by no means can feel like a king and know the meaning of contentment. If we all were able choose contentment ( 😉 ), it would be the sweetest thing, t’would make me sing!
Thanks, Wendyl 🙂
I really do enjoy putting together the “mellow” medleys every Sunday, and I must say your “connection” came across as keeping the mellow theme going. It was put together so nicely and said it all … in a very mellow manner!
XOXOXOXO
I wanna go back … Hmmm, just did !
Thank you, Dale 🙂
Going back is what it’s all about, my friend. Glad you enjoyed the trip!
I must admit the Righteous Brothers and Elvis were my two favorites in this segment… although the Lovin’ Spoonful and Roger Miller both brought back memories that made me smile. The fragments of history that occurred that year are always an added treat. I especially like seeing the cost of things and the average wage. The DOW at less than 1,000 …. wow don’t I wish I invested then!!!!! Thanks for making the morning brighter each day Ray – hope you Rock this one!
Thank you, Barbara 🙂
I try to put something a “little extra” into the background history just for you because you have mentioned how much you enjoy it.
When I was putting the medley together, I just knew the Righteous Brothers and that Presley guy would be well-received.
Rock The Day!
Ahhh Sunday…to be 15 again, well maybe not but love the music. Loved the news…so long ago but just yesterday. Hard to believe how worthless our money is these days.
But for now…I am hitting rewind and take another walk down memory lane. Thank you for soothing my Sunday.
Thank you, Donna 🙂
Hitting rewind is a sure fire way to ignore the outside world and get away from the troubled times we live in.
Have a WONDERFUL day!
Oh hey Ray! You had me at the righteous Brothers right away! And then who couldn’t love Elvis oh my gosh all the songs that you picked are so special. Love Rodger and Miller have always loved that song I know every single word, and certainly I sang along with it. This is a wonderful start of the week. I hope that I can make the time to listen to everyone. Music is definitely the best medium in the whole wide world between people. And this one today was so soothing. Thank you thank you you’re the best!
Thank you, Sandy 🙂
I’m so glad you enjoyed it. Sundays were made for mellow 🙂
Having a very mellow Tuesday(wifi finally working so I can listen to music.) Enjoyed the history at the top, too. Saw Dylan at UVM, shortly after he “went electric”. There were people who booed him, when he brought out the electric guitar, but I enjoyed it all.
Thanks, Pat 🙂
You saw Dylan play? I am now officially very jealous! 🙂
I’m glad the music helps to bring back some wonderful memories.
Yes, Ray,it was in the Patrick Gym & as I remember it was sold out. I had a poster for the concert & years later it was thrown away during a move. I later saw an add in the Free Press of someone offering $1,000 dollars for the poster!! I blamed my husband for throwing it away. LOL
Ouch, Pat … but it IS always the husband’s fault 😉
