We started our look back at the music of 1968 yesterday by playing a medley of some of the softer music released that year.
Today will be, in the timeless words of Monty Python, “something completely different.”
The six songs included here are β or should be β very familiar to listeners even though none of them reached #1. I have included their highest charting position in parentheses next to the artist name below.
Go ahead, tell me you aren’t familiar with these rock classics!

Vintage 1968 Medley / Part 2
Chambers Brothers (#11) – Steppenwolf (#2)
Status Quo (#12) – Rolling Stones (#3)
Eric Burdon & The Animals (#5) – Cream (#6)
Ray I don’t care what other people say this year was just Status Quo!! Allthough it is something completly different, so when your out on the highway you realize that you never want to die however if you are drinking cream soda and riding with the Chamber Brothers you get the sense they are animals and put the burdon all on you!! But I realize it’s all right now,, because when you are down in Monterey you know the twain shall meet up with you in the white room where you get to watch Monty Python go rolling stones!! Now I do realize Ray that your great uncle was a steppenwolf and raised a bunch of animals I think you turned out just fine!!
Thank you, Fred … for the excellent “analysis” and for making me laugh out loud!
You were clearly Born To Be Wild π
ROCK ON!
great songs, although with the way I am feeling (zombie) I think I was likely born to be wild in another life … LOL
Get your motor running, Penny, head out on the highway. π
OK Ray, now your talking.
Chambers Brothers, what a great group! I saw them perform at The Quaker City Rock Fest, they put on an amazing performance. I could listen to Time Has Come Today all day long. I was amused that it was an all Black group, with the exception of the White drummer! What?
Steppenwolf I saw for the first time at The Electric Factory in Philly. It was the night I got engaged to my wife, so it was memorable for several reasons.
Eric Burden, after the Animals, had some very interesting recordings. Spill thWine, with War and Monterey & San Francisco Nights. Would you call them βtalking bluesβ? Whatever, I liked them, a lot.
Thanks again for some fun listening.
Thanks, Don. π
Brian Keenan (that white drummer) used to joke that he was pretty sure “Mom was fooling around when she got pregnant for me.” π
Sadly, he died of a heart attack in 1985.
I can see why Steppenwolf has a special place in your vault of memories.
Ray, this is crazy, I saw on another site that today is Willie Chambers Birthday. I clicked on the link and it took me to YouTube and the 11.o3 version of the song. Also this gem:

If you have time check out Willie Chambers recent NAMM interview (1/20/2020). Clive Davis, the boss at Columbia Records, didn’t want this recorded for the album. Their producer David Rubinson went out on a limb and basically said fck it…we’re gonna do it anyways. Had the group come into the studio earlier on a scheduled date, and it was done in (I know it sounds unbelievable)..one take. Rubinson was doing the effects on the fly on the board. No splicing, no editing, no overdubs. I assume it was on the label dime and they didn’t want to attract too much attention if they worked on it longer. Davis fired David Rubinson because of this..but the rest is as we say..”history”. Willie stated in the interview he never heard the mix until the record was final.
And just think, Don, how badly the Chambers Brothers were ripped off. They received NO royalty checks until 1994 for that song!
Definitely a rock day! Kind of a big band era of a different kind. Keeps the blood pumping. Angst mixed with electric guitar, the signature sounds of our time. Anthems like Born to be Wild, live on forever.
Looking forward to tomorrowβs offerings!
Thanks, Donna. π
It was definitely a day for rock and roll! We had so many great ones that year.
Here’s an advance preview for you … Wednesday is going to be Ladies’ Day … 1968!
Have a GREAT day!
I’m very familiar with all of these rockin’ classics! This medley certainly got my motor running! XOXOXOXO
After a late night, I wake next morning, tired, still yawning. I’ve lots to do and can’t put it off another day. While looking for some breakfast,I frowned at the crumbs of a crust of bread. My roommate was also in the kitchen, staring me down with yellow tigers crouched in jungles in her dark eyes. She tried to blame me for eating all the cereal and you know I would not lie, no I would not lie! I’ll end up leaving without any food because I need to head out on the highway. Guess I can add grocery shopping to my to-do-list….
Very nicely done, Wendyl! π
I can tell that your mind is as sharp as a tack and ready for the beginning of school, “Teach” (can’t put it off another day) π
XOXOXOXO
Still chuckling at the thought of Fred weaving artists and group names from your medley into his comments. Keep it up you two!
By the way great tunes.
Don’t encourage him, Marty. Mr. G is nothing but trouble! π
No, to be serious, both Fred and Wendy brighten my day with their witty comments.
Glad you’re enjoying the music. π
Easy to listen to these whether the start of the day or the end of the day. We really did want to set the world on fire didn’t we? Thanks for Rocking it Ray ….
Thanks, Barbara. π
We did try but in a manner unlike today where there is a new breed trying to literally set the world on fire.
ROCK THE DAY!
