1967 Vintage Medley / Part 4

1967 was a lot more than male artists climbing up the Billboard charts. It was also the year women left their mark.

Lulu scored with her song from a Sidney Poitier film and Petula Clark climbed high with a song written by actor Charlie Chaplin.
Linda Ronstadt & The Stone Poneys had a hit with a Mike Nesmith song, while Elaine “Spanky” McFarlane (and her gang) made their debut.
Diana Ross & The Supremes continued their chart success and so did Martha & The Vandellas, but it was Aretha Franklin who stood out as the greatest female artist of 1967 … and you must know which song is coming.

Once again, I have added the highest Billboard chart position in parentheses beside the names below.

Ray this is a Lulu!! This won’t be easy but we have got so much to learn. Why are the stars so bright? Because it’s the same old story Ray you and I travel to a different drum and I’m not saying you ain’t pretty all I’m saying is I remember you saying Sunday will never be the same!! However I remember being all alone and friends saying it could not be done yet the sweet words are a reflection of what will come!! So all I ask my friend is that you just give me a little respect!! That’s all we need!! Have a great day!! And stay away from stoned poneys!!!

It’s such a beautiful morning and flowers are smiling bright. It’s hard to believe summer is coming to an end and I’m already asking it, “When are you comin’ back?” I’ll keep my chin up ’cause although you’re gone, I keep holding on to the happy times oh, when you were mine. Sunny afternoons that made me feel so warm inside….sweeter than honey. I see no sense in the cryin’ and grievin’. It isn’t easy, but I’ll try.

The ladies certainly made me smile this morning! Great mix! You always make my days feel sunny. 8| XOXOXOXO

      Thanks, Wendyl. 🙂
The ladies may have made you smile but YOU just made ME smile with your “connectible summary”!
      XOXOXOXO

Hey Ray some nice selections today. Nothing like a strong female voice. Have you seen the Linda Ronstadt documentary? It is very well done. Tragic that she lost her voice, such a
Powerful instrument. She was so very versatile.
I always thought Spanky would go further than she did. She had those 2 or 3 hits and she was gone. Another beautiful, strong voice.
    Thanks Ray.

      Thanks, Don.
I have seen the Ronstadt documentary. It is indeed a very tragic story. She was one of my favorite female singers because she was so good with so many different genres.
Spanky did flame out quickly. When guitarist Malcolm Hale died in 1968, the band decided to call it quits. I recall her becoming Mama Cass’ “replacement” in the “New” Mamas & Papas a few years later but John Phillips’ ongoing problems with drugs ended that arrangement.
I’m glad you enjoyed the tunes!
      Be well!

great songs by great female singers ……….. need more of them and or more recognized. Back in that era it was very difficult for women to succeed in music or any other field for that matter. rock on my dear friend

    1. Ray (Post author)

      Thanks, Penny 🙂
You’re right about the difficulties female singers had getting the proper recognition back then. That’s why I thought they deserved their own special day! 🙂
      Rock On, Sweetheart!

I cannot begin to add anything that has not been covered —- except to let you know it’s been an extremely trying week with a family member with a ruptured disk …. surgery scheduled for Tuesday — so to come home at the end of a long day to listen to these is the very best ….. love every single one of them … thank you for brightening my day. And I must admit when Aretha started the volume went up … significantly! You rocked it!

    1. Ray (Post author)

      Thank you, Barbara.
I suspect I know who the family member is. Please tell him he is in my thoughts and prayers.
I’m glad the music helped, at least a little.

  6. Donna

You have my RESPECT for choosing such fine female artists and songs for today!

Interesting to look back at the movie that To Sir was penned for…how do you think it would be received these days? I loved it, Sidney Poitier wa a great actor and a dreamboat oh and not afraid to play a controversial role.

Great music from incredible voices. Some of whom never got the recognition they deserved.

      Thanks, Donna. 🙂
Clever wordplay on your part. 🙂
