Time does not diminish the sadness. It has been 18 years, yet in many ways it still feels like yesterday. The hurt and the pain will never go away, nor should it. Americans bounced back – as we always do – but the memories of those lost and the bravery of heroes who saved countless others will remain forever etched in our hearts and minds.
Thirteen years ago, Heather and I started our morning show on WCFR in Springfield, VT. We both knew it could not be the usual program of music from the 50s and 60s, a lot of laughter, and good-natured jabs at each other.
We spent the next four hours playing sound clips from that fateful day five years earlier and the music those events inspired.
You can hear below the way we started that show, followed by the song that has become synonymous with September 11, 2001.

Heather and Ray Show
September 11, 2006
As I listen to your comments and then the song I remember exactly what I was doing on that fateful day …. and the knot in the pit of my stomach that developed immediately as I watched the second hit on the world trade center. The music created after that event speaks to how so many of us felt then …. and still feel now. We need to NEVER forget that day and how quickly life as we know it can be changed forever. Thank you for reminding us Ray and Heather …
Thanks, Barbara. I too recall watching that day unfold. Until the second plane hit, I was hoping the first had been a tragic mistake, but after that ball of fire exploded on my TV screen, I knew none of us would ever be the same again.
The emotion and the pain never goes away …. NEVER FORGET ~
It will never go away.
Even now, 13 years later, listening to you speak still puts a chill down my spine. You were magnificent.
Thanks for sharing this Ray…I was in the hospital recovering from my motorcycle accident when this all went down, so its news articles or something like this that reminds me of how terrible this was.
Thank you, Nancy. It was a day none of us will ever forget.
That beautiful mesmerizing voice announcing on WCFR, is unmistakable. This was a wonderful tribute to America. I sure remember that day fatefully. I was living in California, and it was very early in the morning when my phone rang and woke me out of a sound sleep. My son on the on the line, saying mom mom turn on your TV. Oh my God! We must never forget what happened that day on a beautiful September morning with a blue sky,
Thank you, Sandy. I will never let this date pass without playing this clip. ❤
That day changed my life forever. Ray you always remember and that’s why I love and respect you you so much!!
Karleen … I will never forget that day and what it did to you and your family.
I Love You ❤
This is still so heartbreaking. I was sitting at work beside two women from NY. They got phone calls before it hit the news. It was unbelievable. I couldn’t fully believe it until we saw the videos. I’m sitting here in tears recollecting those moments. We can never forget
Thank you, Eileen. Rose captured it all so beautifully ❤
There are s few powerful songs about that day. I think this is the most powerful!! Even after all these years still chokes me up!
Thank you, Penny ❤
Chills and tears. Fears that we have forgotten. God, please help our country to remember who we are.
Amen, Donna … Amen ❤
