We continue our look back at music deaths in 2021 with five more from May and June.

Today’s medley includes one of the most influential, and accomplished drummers in American music history. But Roger Hawkins was more than just a drummer. He was co-founder of Muscle Shoals Sound in Sheffield, AL, where he and his studio musician colleagues formed the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section. They were better known as “The Swampers”, thanks to being immortalized in the lyrics to Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Southern-rock anthem Sweet Home Alabama.

There were so many choices to showcase his talent, but I hope you enjoy the one I selected.

I’ll be back with more on Monday. The names to come next week were truly legendary.

Lloyd Price (R&B singer) May 2
Roger Hawkins (session drummer) May 20
B.J. Thomas (pop singer) May 29
David Lewis (keyboards with Ambrosia) June 7
Vic Briggs (guitarist with The Animals) June 29
