Deep Cuts
“We were all on this ship in the sixties, our generation, a ship going to discover the New World. And the Beatles were in the crow’s nest of that ship.”
~John Lennon
Yeah, yeah, yeah, I can hear it now. Not another Beatles medley! But hold on for just one second. I realize it might be possible that some of the hit singles have been played so many times they have been ingrained in your mind.
But what about the songs that didn’t get a lot of airplay in 1964 and 1965? Those were songs that may have been ignored for the simple reason that radio stations focused on the latest 45.
In the musical world, the deep cut is always at risk of being overlooked. For the world’s biggest pop stars, the hit single is forever paramount, with their non-singles carrying an air of relative unworthiness.
But the smashes only ever tell half of an artist’s story. The real stuff of devotion is found in the album tracks – the deep cuts.
