People who were alive the day John Kennedy was assassinated can tell you exactly where they were and what they were doing when they heard the unbelievable news. It’s the same situation when the subject is September 11, 2001.

December 8, 1980 is another one of those dates. I was watching Monday Night Football when Howard Cosell interrupted the broadcast with the horrible news John Lennon had been shot and killed.

Forty-three years later, it is still hard to fathom the senselessness of that violent act. Lennon had only recently emerged from a five-year hiatus from the music scene and was optimistic about the future, both his and the promise he hoped the 1980s held for everyone.

In the blink of an eye, that was all erased. Today, I am not playing any Beatles material, primarily because John had long ago moved on from the lovable “mop top” days of the Fab Four. I am instead playing some of his best known music from his solo career.
