People who were alive the day John Kennedy was assassinated can tell you exactly where they were and what they were doing when they heard the unbelievable news. It’s the same situation when the subject is September 11, 2001.
December 8, 1980 is another one of those dates. I was watching Monday Night Football when Howard Cosell interrupted the broadcast with the horrible news John Lennon had been shot and killed.
Forty-three years later, it is still hard to fathom the senselessness of that violent act. Lennon had only recently emerged from a five-year hiatus from the music scene and was optimistic about the future, both his and the promise he hoped the 1980s held for everyone.
In the blink of an eye, that was all erased. Today, I am not playing any Beatles material, primarily because John had long ago moved on from the lovable “mop top” days of the Fab Four. I am instead playing some of his best known music from his solo career.

John Lennon Medley
43 years…wow. The first thing that came to my mind when I read this was “Imagine” all of the music we missed out on. Blessed to still hear the magic that he left behind for us. Gone far too soon.
Thank you, Pat. Very well said.
A senseless tragedy that robbed us all.
I was 23 and we were getting ready for our move from an apartment in Canton, NY to our new home in Potsdam, NY. We had just moved there from Maine. Our daughter, Jeni, was 2 and my wife,Ellie, was pregnant with our son, Travis.
I, too, was watching my team, the New England Patriots on Monday Night Football.
Thank you, Jim. I wasn’t a hardcore fan by 1980, but it was nice to have him back in the game with Double Fantasy. George Harrison’s passing was much more painful for me, but the shocking nature of John’s death was still unreal.
Can’t believe it has been 43 years!! All the Beattles have had success as individuals – who knows how far John would have went with his as his potential music and his life was stolen from him!
Great medley!
Have a wonderful weekend my friend
XXOO
Thank you, Penny. While none of us got the chance to see and hear what John might have done as the years rolled on, we need to take solace in the fact that he left us so much in his lifetime.
Have a lovely weekend!
XOXO
Lennon was a talented musician, a rather lost soul always looking for happiness and feeling great loss
He always wanted people to be better than they were and had little time for symbols of power or religion
But we all shine on
I love Jealous Guy
Thank you, Mary Helen.
John was, in my opinion, a rather sad case. He found the fame he always wanted with the Beatles, then spent the last ten years of his life tearing down the group’s foundation. He may have found something special with Yoko, but I will always believe she manipulated him to an extreme. Part of that is her fault. The other half of the blame goes to John for allowing her to get away with it.
Great writer Ray but I agree with you Yoko in my opinion changed him and he was never the same!! Great man and another leaving us way to soon!! I often wonder if he and Paul would ever get writing again!! Stay warm and may God Bless!!
Love ya
Thank you, Fred! I will forever be haunted by the way he was gunned down, shot in the back by some gutless coward.
I have serious doubts about Paul and John ever writing again. They both had gone indifferent directions.
Enjoy your weekend!
Love ya
I had a crazy day yesterday, but Jojo and to start our day with your awesome medley today! Have a wonderful weekend. <3
