Playing The 70s

As we wrap up another week of music medleys (TGIF!), we’re going a long way away from the soft Doo-Wop we played yesterday.

Today we’re stuck in the 70s!

We stayed away from the obvious choices (this time): Peter Frampton, Pink Floyd, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Aerosmith, Queen, etc.
Instead of “epic classics,” we’re playing songs that held lofty positions in the singles charts during the decade.

Before you begin playing the medley, I want to let you know about a new format. Beginning next week, this will be the focus of each day:
• Monday – American 60s
• Tuesday – British 60s
• Wednesday – Doo-Wop
• Thursday – The 70s
• Friday – Whatever I Feel Like Playing!

Good Morning, Ray. The new format looks exciting. I look forward to next week. Friday looks both intriguing & a bit mysterious. Speaking of mystery, where did Steely Dan ever come from. Their style, presentation, writing and delivery all were so different. They sure did their own thing. Well, that’s what the 70s were all about. A very different time, our minds were wide open.
The Eagles, what a talented group! Taking California Country to the masses. I would call their music infectious. Not too loud and a banjo! Who would have thought a banjo would appear in hip music! You go, Eagles. Dire Straits, another group that took the airwaves by storm. Their fresh sound and great playing made an immediate impression. They also had some interesting work on MTV. I can always use a hunk of Elvis. He delivers it all with this song. Eddie Money, the guy next door who sings his heart out. A Rock & Roll Everyman Straightforward, no nonsense rocker. Today was a hit with me Ray. Thank you for starting my weekend off on the right foot. Enjoy your day, or two, off. Rest up my friend because next week looks like a “Take no prisoners” type of week. Rock on my Brother!

      Thanks, Don. 🙂
I watched a documentary on Steely Dan last night and my biggest takeaway was Becker and Fagan had absolutely no fun in their approach. They were very demanding of their sidemen and smiles were rarely seen. All that aside, they were very popular with everyone (but me) so I guess their approach paid off for them.
That banjo on the Eagles tune was played by Bernie Leadon. He was (and is) a great guitarist who left the band when Don Henley and Glenn Frey decided to abandon country rock for straight rock.
I was a great admirer of Dire Straits. Mark Knopfler’s guitar work was nothing short of amazing.
Elvis … nothing more needs to be said. 🙂
I threw Eddie Money in at the last minute. I rarely play much by him even though I have a lot of his material. Maybe I should rethink that.
Ah yes, the new format. As I said to Wendy, this should prevent me having to sit here and wonder what I’m going to put together. At least now I’ll have a solid idea of what in hell I’m doing! 😉
Stay warm this weekend and be safe!
      ROCK ON, BRO!

Ray ……….. what a great way to end the week …. have replayed at least 4 times. I know I haven’t commented on some of the medleys lately but have listened to ALL of them – more than once because they have some great songs and help with the day ……… now back to listening to this one again!! Know you make a difference / impact with so many people with the music you share! Have a safe and warm week-end 🙂
