We wrap up our look at the #1 songs in 1966 with a six-song medley that starts with the #1 song on November 5 and takes us through the end of the year.
That doesn’t mean we’re finished with 1966! Tomorrow we’ll be playing a long medley of songs that may not have hit #1 that year but were still remarkable.

Vintage 1966 Medley / Part 5
Monkees – Johnny Rivers – Supremes
New Vaudeville Band – Beach Boys – Monkees
I hadn’t heard some of these for a while, very cool! And a good year for the Monkees, too! Thanks for cranking out the tunes, Music Master! XOXOXOXO
Thank YOU for listening, Wendyl! β₯οΈ
XOXOXOXO
Ray you have got to set me free! Just because I came from the poor side of town? I can’t blame you for trying but in Winchester there are a lot of good vibrations and even Wendy said it was a good year for the Monkees..Now I’m hoping Pat is a believer and after reading this I guess I better take the last train to Clarkesville!!
Fred, you have had one hell of an outstanding week! I just put the finishing touches on tomorrow’s medley and I can’t tell you how many times I included a song and said to myself, “I bet Fred played that back in The Invaders days!”
ROCK ON!
A lot of good vibrations, today, Ray. And, Fred, yes I am a believer, and you sure have out done yourself this week. (You, too, Ray.)
Thanks, Pat π
I do believe you are also going to be happy with next week’s music π
I’m not in order but saw this set first so decided to listen …. the Monkees were having a run …. loved Johnny Rivers .– had forgotten this one until today along with Winchester Cathedral … the Supremes were on fire …. but chiming in at this point let’s me see that you and Fred are STILL on fire!!!!! Hope you are Rocking the Day Ray …. and you to Fred Guilmette!
Thanks, Barbara. π
Just wait until Friday’s set!
Fred IS on a serious roll!
Bravo Monkees ..
Thanks, Dale.
The Monkees were similar to a lot of bands in the Sixties when it came to backing musicians. For example, while none of the four played an instrument on both of these #1 songs, Micky (on lead vocal) and Peter (one of the harmony vocals) were the only two members of the band to appear on Last Train To Clarksville, and those two, along with Davy (on harmony), were the only guys to appear on I’m A Believer. Mike Nesmith didn’t sing on either song.
But as I said, a lot of groups back then never actually played on their recordings; Gary Lewis & The Playboys, The Association, Gary Puckett & The Union Gap, the Turtles, and the Grass Roots are just a few. π
Such a variety of sounds. Monkeys on a train! Smooth Johnny Rivers on the wrong side of the tracks. And his girl says, just let me go, set me free. Supremely setting him in his place. There she goes headed for Winchester Cathedral to see a man in a vaudeville band. He whistles such a happy tune. But he seems to be missing someone else. And then she feels sweet vibrations and beautiful music! Maybe there is still a chance. Oh Yes, it is true! He saw her face and they Believe! Love at last
Sorry Ray I have no idea where that came from. Great songs!
Thanks, Donna! π
Don’t apologize, it was FANTASTIC!
Ray, good job!
The Monkees, I was an early adapter, love every song on their first Lp. Then all the Pre-Fab Four business came out and I admit I fell for it. As I got over myself, I came to appreciate them again and became a major Mike Nesmith fan. I wore out the three First National Band albums. I was perfect timing as I was moving over to country then. I guess it was βRock β country, Byrdβs, etc. Last year I saw both Mikeβs FNB tour and Mike & Mickey. Bothe were excellent. Never knew that Clarksville was the last stop before Vietnam Nam.
Johnny Rivers, love his plaintive voice. I think my favorite might be Secret Agent Man.
The Supremes, my wife wore out many hair brushes singing in the mirror to their songs.
New Vaudeville Band, just listening to them a couple weeks ago. Going deep, my favorite song is βIf I Had a Talking Picture of Youβ.
How about them Beach Boys? Getting all fancy with a thermin. Clara Rockmore would be so proud.
So many different sounds. People were more open back in the day. Thanks for the memories.
Thank you, Don.
While I will admit I was never much of a Monkees fan, I did enjoy (a lot!) Nesmith’s First National Band.
As for your favorite Rivers’ song, I think you’ll be happy with Friday’s medley! π
Your are making me and the birdies day π <3
Thanks, Nancy! π
ROCK THE DAY!
